Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most magical moments — and it passes so quickly.

One minute they’re curled up and sleepy, the next they’re wide-eyed and growing out of their Newborn Clothes. As a Professional Newborn Photographer based in Basingstoke, one of the most common questions I’m asked is:

“When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?”

Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of this special window of time.

When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos – The Ideal Timeframe: 5–21 Days Old

The best time to photograph your newborn is within the first three weeks from birth — ideally between 5 to 21 days old.

During this window, your baby is:

• Naturally sleepy and more easily posed
• Still curled up from the womb (perfect for those sweet, snug poses)
• Less likely to be experiencing baby acne or colic

Every baby is different — and I’ve photographed gorgeous sessions outside this timeframe, too. If you’ve already had your baby and think you’ve missed the window, don’t worry! Just get in touch and we’ll plan something beautiful for where your baby is right now.

When Should You Book?

The best time to book your Newborn Session is while you’re still pregnant — usually anytime after your 20-week scan. This guarantees your spot in my calendar, as I only take a limited number of sessions per month to allow flexibility around due dates.

Once your baby arrives, just send me a quick message, and we’ll confirm the exact session date.

Studio Sessions in Basingstoke

All Newborn Sessions take place in my cosy, welcoming home studio in Whitchurch, Hampshire. The space is warm, peaceful, and fully stocked with beautiful blankets, wraps, headbands, and tiny outfits.

Parents can sit back with a cup of tea, relax, and watch as I gently and safely guide your baby through a series of natural, timeless poses.

Capturing This Once-in-a-Lifetime Stage

Your baby will never be this tiny again, and photos from this stage quickly become some of the most treasured keepsakes for families. Both my girls’ Newborn Photos are still on the Living Room Walls, and they are 8 and 12 years old now. I often find myself looking at them and reminiscing. The girls like to look at them too, especially Isla’s and then Grace gets to see herself as the newly promoted Big Sister, proudly holding baby Isla.
