5 Beautiful Lessons from being a Newborn & Family Photographer.

After photographing hundreds of newborns, toddlers, cake-covered one-year-olds, and gorgeous families over the years, I’ve seen a lot. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: babies, children and dads (lol) don’t follow scripts, and that’s exactly what makes every session so special.

Whether you’ve already had a shoot with me or you’re thinking about booking one, here are 5 Beautiful Lessons from being a Newborn and Family Photographer.

1. Babies Run the Show (And That’s Totally Fine)

You can schedule nap times, pack snacks, and create a Pinterest board brimming with photo inspiration… only for your baby to refuse to sleep, your toddler to refuse to sit next to the baby or dad to blink in every other shot.

And honestly? That’s completely normal. Each baby is unique, and we adapt to the situation. I assure you — we’ll always capture the moments.

💡 Mum tip: try to time your baby’s feed for when you arrive at the studio, we want a full, sleepy baby.

2. Siblings Are Adorable Little Wild Cards

Siblings bring a whole different energy. From accidental headlocks disguised as hugs, to sudden snack demands mid-shot, toddlers are unpredictable (and hilarious).

You can’t pose sibling chaos — you embrace it and capture the magic of real family life.

💡 Can you guess which sibling ran rings around me from the photos below? After a few games of peek-a, we wore her out, and we got a handful of great shots!

3. Dads Just Need a Little Pep Talk

Let’s be honest — most dads walk into a photoshoot feeling a bit awkward. They don’t know where to stand or weirdly how to smile (think Chandler Bing).

But give them 10 minutes and lots of compliments — they relax, start having fun, and those sweet moments start happening.

💡 Dads, don’t stress — you’ve got this!

4. Cake Smash = Beautiful, Frosting-Filled Chaos

If you’re imagining a picture-perfect cake smash with baby diving face first into that cake, lower those expectations just a little… I mean, this in the nicest possible way!

Some babies go all in — face first. Others poke at the cake like it’s suspicious. Some cry. Some eat the decorations. And that’s what makes it amazing. Cake smashes are messy, hilarious, and full of personality.

💡 Can you tell which baby from the cake smash photos cried during their session? No, because once they settled into the new situation, the photos were adorable!

5. Don’t be so hard on yourself!

I’ve had mums worry during their shoot — the baby wouldn’t settle, the toddler refused to smile, and nothing felt “perfect.”

But then they see the photos… and everything changes. What they see is love — their beautiful baby, just as they are. The giggles, the chaos, the snuggles, even the little tears. All of it is real, and all of it is perfectly them. 💛
