the myths of Pregnancy vs. Reality: What Every Expectant Mum Should Know
As a Family Photographer based in Whitchurch Hampshire, I meet mums from first pregnancy and beyond. It’s a wonderful privilege to watch your family grow and to capture your family moments for you.
Pregnancy can feel like a whirlwind of advice, opinions, and, let’s be honest, a few wild myths! If you’re an expectant mum, it’s important to separate fact from fiction. Here’s a light-hearted look at some common pregnancy Myths of Pregnancy vs. Reality
Myth 1: You’re Eating for Two
Reality: While it’s tempting to indulge in extra treats, you’re not really eating for two in the sense of doubling your portions. In the first trimester, you only need about 100 extra calories a day.
Myth 2: You Can’t Exercise While Pregnant
Reality: Many women can continue exercising throughout their pregnancy, with some modifications. Activities like walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga can be great ways to stay active and relieve stress. Always check with your healthcare provider first, though.
Myth 3: Heartburn Means Your Baby Will Have Lots of Hair
Reality: This old wives’ tale is just that— While some pregnant women do experience heartburn, it doesn’t correlate with the amount of hair your baby will have. Heartburn is more likely caused by hormonal changes and the growing uterus pressing on your stomach.
Myth 4: You’ll Glow During Pregnancy
Reality: The so-called “pregnancy glow” isn’t universal. Some women experience breakouts, swelling, and other skin changes. Everyone’s experience is different, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t feel radiant all the time!
Myth 5: You’ll Instinctively Know How to Parent
Reality: Parenting is a learning curve, and it’s perfectly normal to feel unsure. There’s no handbook for it! Trust your instincts, seek advice, and remember that every parent figures it out in their own way. I’m 11 years in and I’m learning all the time!
I hope your pregnancy is an easy one, where you glow. If it’s not, you are not alone, and it is not a reflection on you. You’ve got this!
