Goodbye to Pink and Blue, Hello to Neutrals!

A Shift in Newborn Photo Shoots

There has been a shift in Newborn Photo shoots here in my Whithurch, Hampshire studio. Newborn photography has come a long way since its early days. You go back to the 80s when I was born and we were laid on a blanket with minimal posing from the photographer. Fast forward to the 00s and I can remember everyone going crazy for Anne Geddes and her unique style of the baby in a flower pot (I definitely had several of these prints on my walls back in the day) to the more refined poses of today lead by industry favourites such as Kelly Brown.

Evolving Trends

Over the years, trends have evolved, and with each passing year, new ideas emerge about how to make a Newborn Session feel fresh and unique. Just like fashion, photography trends come and go. As photographers, we learn to adapt and experiment with new ideas to keep up with the ever-changing tastes of our clients. One trend that’s caught my attention recently is a noticeable shift away from the traditional pinks and blues and toward more neutral tones. It’s always interesting to see how parents’ preferences change over time. Right now, soft greys, earthy tones, and pastel greens are becoming the new go-to for many Newborn Sessions.

So, What’s behind this shift in Newborn Photo Shoots? Let’s explore three possible reasons why more parents are leaning toward neutral colours for their baby’s big photoshoot debut.

1. Moving Away from Gender Norms

One of the reasons for this change could be the growing movement toward breaking down gender stereotypes. More parents are choosing to steer away from the traditional blue-for-boys, pink-for-girls setup as they embrace gender neutrality. Neutral tones allow parents to celebrate their newborns without assigning a gendered colour palette, offering a more inclusive approach from the start.

2. A More Timeless and Aesthetic Look

Neutral colours are often chosen for their timeless appeal. These shades don’t go out of style and they fit seamlessly into any home decor. Parents might be opting for soft greys, whites, and beiges because these tones create a serene and minimalist aesthetic. After all, these are photos that will be treasured forever, and neutral colours won’t clash with any nursery theme or family style.

3. Focus on the Baby, Not the Colour

Lastly, another possibility is that parents may simply want the focus to be on their baby, rather than on the colours they’re wearing. By choosing neutral tones, the spotlight is kept on the baby’s precious features and natural expressions, rather than any specific colour choice.

What do you think?

It’s clear that the world of newborn photoshoots is evolving, But what do you think? Why are parents moving away from pink and blue in favour of these neutral tones? As a bit of a traditionalist myself, I still love incorporating colours into newborn sessions. There’s something so sweet about adding a pop of pink or blue. But I’m always open to anything my clients suggest! If there’s a colour scheme you love or a vision you have in mind, I’m happy to make it work. And if I don’t have what you’re looking for, I’m more than happy to source it for you.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this trend, so feel free to share them in the comments below. Or feel free to have a look through my newborn gallery.
