5 Playful Ways to Entertain Toddlers Without a Screen

Keeping kids of any age away from screens can be a bit of a challenge. With tablets and phones always within reach, it’s tempting to let them have more screen time, especially when you have a job to do. But while a bit of screen time can be educational, there’s a growing concern about how much time kids are spending in front of screens at such a young age. The NHS recommends no more than an hour of screen time for toddlers each day, and the rest of the time can be filled with other, more interactive activities that help them develop their skills.

If you’re looking for a few screen-free activities to keep your toddler entertained, here are 5 Playful Ways to Entertain Toddlers Without a Screen. No judgment here—sometimes we all need to hand that tablet over to get something done but these activities are a great alternative to keep your toddler engaged when you have the time to interact with them too.

1. Create a DIY Sensory Bin

Sensory play is a fantastic way for toddlers to learn through touch and exploration. You don’t need anything fancy to create a sensory bin—just grab a container (like a big plastic tub), and fill it with things you have around the house. You could use rice, pasta, or even shredded paper. Add small toys, spoons, and cups for pouring, scooping, and sorting.

2. Have a Dance Party

Turn on some music and have a mini dance party! Toddlers love to move to music, and dancing is not only fun but also great for their coordination and physical development. You can dance around together, clap your hands, or make up silly moves.  If you’re feeling sociable, why not join a toddler group such as Music with Mummy to get your child dancing with others and you get to meet other parents too.

3. Explore Nature

Getting outdoors is one of the best ways to distract children of all ages from screens, and it’s something they can get excited about. Head to the park, go for a walk or simply spend time in your garden. We loved our Finkley Passes and Marwell Passes when mine were small. Nowadays you will find us at Moors Valley doing Go Ape or similar.

4. Get Crafty

Crafts are a brilliant way to keep toddlers entertained. Toddlers can colour in pictures, make handprints, or even get messy with finger painting. Not only does crafting keep their hands busy, but it’s also great for their brain development, as they work on fine motor skills and learn to express themselves.

5. Read Books Together

It might sound obvious, but reading together is one of the best ways to keep toddlers engaged without a screen. It’s a lovely bonding experience and helps develop their language skills. Julia Donaldson’s Books such as The Gruffalo or Stick Man have been firm family favourites for many years.

The toddler years

As a Mum of a pre teen I can promise you that these first years of your child’s life, before they head off to school, is something special. This is the time when you’re their focus, and everything they do revolves around you. After this, they start spending more time with other kids, teachers, and other influences outside of their home. The toddler years were some of the best years of parenting for me—so don’t let them pass you by. Take the time to enjoy all the little moments—the laughter, the mess and the cuddles…

Before you know it, they’ll be in their teenage years, probably hiding away in their room with a screen in their hands, and those early years will feel like a lifetime ago. So, make the most of this time, building beautiful memories together.
