When to Book a Newborn Photographer Basingstoke (And Why Timing Matters)

One of the most common questions I get from parents is “When should I book my newborn photoshoot?” and honestly, it makes such a difference to your experience and your final images.

If you’re currently expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Basingstoke, this guide will help you feel prepared and confident about when to book.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photoshoot?

Ideally, your newborn session should be booked during your third trimester.

Most of my clients secure their space after their 20-week scan to make sure availability is there when baby arrives. I only take on a limited number of newborns each month, so booking ahead really does make things easier.

That said—if you’ve already had your baby and are just starting to look, please don’t worry. I will always do my best to fit you in where I can.

The Best Age for Newborn Photography

The perfect time to photograph your baby is between 10–14 days old.

At this stage, babies are:

  • Sleepier
  • Naturally curled
  • More settled for those soft, cosy poses

Around day 16–20, I often find babies go through a little growth spurt and can start cluster feeding more. This can make them slightly harder to settle during the session. I therefore try my best to avoid these days.

What If My Baby Has Already Arrived?

You’re not too late.

While the early days are ideal, I will always try my best to accommodate last-minute bookings. Every baby is different, and beautiful images can still be captured—just in a slightly more natural, baby-led way.

A Calm, Baby-Led Experience

My newborn sessions are always completely relaxed and led by your baby.

Nothing is ever forced.
If your baby needs a cuddle, a feed, or a moment with mum, that always comes first.

Many parents arrive feeling a little nervous or unsure what to expect but very quickly, they relax. Most sit back and enjoy watching the session unfold, while others even take advantage of the studio WiFi to catch up on a bit of work.

(Not every mum is on maternity leave—many of my clients run their own businesses, so I completely understand how valuable that time can be.)

“You Must Be a Baby Whisperer…”

One of the things parents say to me most often is that I must be a “baby whisperer” and that I should come and do the night shift!

The truth is, I always laugh and remind them…
This is my calm space. I’m not running on broken sleep from the night before, so I have all the time in the world to gently settle your baby. And that calm energy makes all the difference
