Naming your baby is a big deal! I found that once Bump had a name everything became much more real but thinking about a name for your child is more than just, I like that one. There are other things to consider when naming your baby.
Things to consider when naming your baby number 1 Family Names
Are there any names in your family you either want to use or perhaps you are expected to use?
Shortening or lengthening of names
Perhaps you love a name but can’t stand the shortened version.
I hate it when people lengthen Grace’s name to Gracie. I say had I wanted her to be called Gracie, I’d have put it on her birth certificate! It genuinely upsets me.
What do the initials spell out?
Don’t forget to write out the initials in case it spells out something rude or embarrassing for your child.
Spellings of names
Choosing a unique way to spell your child’s name or an unusually spelt name might sound cute but consider how many times they will need to correct people over their lifetime.
I obviously didn’t consider this one when naming Isla, it catches people out all the time.
Is the name you choose legal?
This one surprised me as well, there are names that you are not legally allowed to choose.
Robocop, Monkey and Nutella are just 3 of the banned names in the UK.
And the hardest consideration of all
Does your partner agree?
It is so disheartening to find what you consider to be the perfect name and your partner says, I don’t like it.
Still struggling to choose?
